IRONHORSE GOLF COURSE CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
Posted February 5, 2008
The construction process has been completed except for small items and some sod work that needs to be done in the spring. During the winter season many projects are taking place that can be done in good weather conditions. When the weather is not cooperating, work is being done to get equipment ready to go for spring mowing.
In the Spring, another seeding of the entire rough and the greens is scheduled. Sod work will take place on holes #5, #10, #15 and a few other areas to assist the golf course in recovering from construction traffic. The goal is to make sure the golf course is ready for a May opening.
Improvements that have taken place at the Golf Course over the last year are as follows:
- All greens have been rebuilt with USGA specifications. The surrounding areas have also been re-shaped.
- Concrete curbs have been added around all teeing areas and greens.
- In some areas concrete paths have been re-routed to provide additional access to players and create a safer travel path.
- The teeing area on hole #5 has been enlarged to accommodate more traffic.
- The creek banks that run through the property have been stabilized in some areas and the flow of water will be improved.
- New trees have been added.
- Bunkers have been shelled out and the drainage system within them improved.
Additional improvements have been made to the Clubhouse as well.
Look for personnel to be on-site in the Clubhouse by April 1st. As soon as possible, tours of the golf course will be available to the general public. Sign up for our e-mail club to receive periodic updates and scheduled tour information.

Great news! The last greens were officially finished around July 5th.

This includes the final walk through and any repairs as construction vehicles pulled out. After a fairly forgiving June and July, the greens grow-in stage is going very well. The heat of August has had no real adverse effects to the brand new greens. As the greens mature and the grass spreads, they begin to show the new character that has been installed at IRONHORSE.

The creek projects are still in full swing and on schedule, so even though the greens are finally looking like greens again, the golf course still doesn't fully resemble a golf course.

The cart path projects are also in progress and are having a dramatic effect on the look and future maneuverability around the course. The improvements are fantastic and the golf course is sure to play better than ever, while continuing to be a challenge! Work will begin soon on the interior of the clubhouse and the surrounding landscape areas.

Despite receiving about eighteen inches of rain in April and May, course construction projects are proceeding as planned. Nine greens have been finished and are growing in. They “turned green” in about five days and Staff has already applied the first granular fertilizer on June 5th.
As the final grading and grassing is accomplished many subtle changes can be seen in each green complex that the golfing public will really appreciate. The eight greens that were completely rebuilt (surrounds and all to raise them out of the flood plain ) have turned out great and each will be a golf showcase for the City of Leawood. Three of these complexes and two other greens should be grassed the week of June 5th , if weather allows. The greens project as a whole is on schedule and is expected to be closed out by June 15th. As the greens are finished the cartpath is being repaired and curbing put in place wherever needed. Some of the cartpath is also being widened to account for traffic flow near greens and tees.
The creek bank project is progressing also and is very near to schedule as weather allows. The east side of the golf course is about fifty - percent complete and the west end of the creek work is well under way. The creek construction is staying flexible and trying to work with the greens construction so that as greens are finished, the nearby creek-work does not interfere with progress .
The flood control project is also well under way and actually got an early start. This project will have one of the most noticeable impacts to the golf course. It will definitely make hole thirteen seem like an entire new golf experience.

Effective January 1st the City of Leawood closed all facilities at the golf course in preparation for the commencement of three major projects including: creek bank stabilization at numerous locations; a storm water management project; and the complete renovation of the all greens from California sand greens to USGA greens. Also during this time several other repair and replace projects will be undertaken by the golf course maintenance staff. The entire property has been designated as a construction site and will have no public access. Please do not utilize any aspects of the property, including the cart paths during this time. Applicable City fines will apply.
Everything is on schedule starting with a pre-bid construction meeting next week, but construction will not begin until late March. Sod was recently stripped to be utilized by a golf course in Oklahoma, saving the City labor and other costs associated with removal of the materials. Sand and other necessary mix materials have been purchased and the maintenance staff will be starting the auxiliary projects soon. Renovations and replacement efforts will commence shortly on the interior of the clubhouse as well.
Orion management staff will be presenting their 2007 marketing efforts to the Governing Body on Monday, February 19 at 7:30 pm. They are also working to complete their recommendations for the budget year 2008, including a “Grand Reopening Event” for the golf course.
